When we open our eyes to the resources around us, there's such delight in supporting our kids and our community. The Zoo at Kamper Park has been a part of the Hub City for a long time but it is not the same as it was 20 years ago. I encourage you to spend the afternoon strolling through South America and Africa and discover the resources right here at home. Today's families, with our busy schedules, are usually looking for places to go and things to see. When sometimes, we really don't have to go so far, as the kids at Petal Primary already know. Josie Lee and her classmates say, "Get out and discover your community".

I'm not Catholic, but I do enjoy St. Thomas Catholic Church's annual Irish Italian Festival which rolls again this weekend. The festival is one of the 'little' things that make Hattiesburg a place to live. It adds to 'quality of life' that makes our city so special. Good food, good music...even a parade. Happy St. Patrick's Day today, and I hope to you see you at the Irish Italian Festival on Saturday!

One of the the things I love about Hattiesburg is its proximity to other cities/areas in the region. After all, that is why it is called The Hub City. Whether it's a trip to the state capital of Jackson or the Mississippi Coast, it's all close. Today, we're making a quick trip to New Orleans for some shopping, a good meal and seeing sites in the French Quarter. It's all within easy reach from Hattiesburg!

Yes, I misspelled "Braking" on purpose...
Last night we enjoyed a fantastic evening on the patio at Canebrake Country Club's weekly Pasta Night, and then paid for it early this morning by visiting the workout room and spending some time on the treadmill and lifting weights. It's all about breaking even. A great meal with friends, then working it off the next morning. All of this can all be found at Canebrake Country Club!

Mississippi is a beautiful state and the Hattiesburg area helps support our state in that claim. The University of Southern Mississippi's All-American Rose Garden and the Longleaf Trace make the top ten list in this article.

We've know this for years, but Hattiesburg was recently named "The Most Livable City in the U.S." This selection was made by the United States Conference of Mayors at their meeting in Dallas recently. Those of us who live here know what a special place Hattiesburg is. It's great to see the rest of the country recognize us!

People often ask what makes the Hattiesburg area a special place to live. My answer is quality of life, and one component is certainly recreational opportunities. Bike trails, state parks and national forests. They're all part of what makes Hattiesburg great!

It's baseball time again and that means one thing… meet you at The Pete! Pete Taylor Park was named in honor of C.J. "Pete" Taylor, who became the tenth baseball coach in Southern Miss history and guided the Golden Eagle baseball program from 1959-83.

This beautiful stadium features chair back seating for 2,054 fans and bleacher seating for 1,212.
The stadium also has media facilities and my personal favorite, the popular right field lounge area known as the "Right Field Roost," which has reserved parking for 40 vehicles and is equipped with barbecue grills! You are sure to have a blast while you cheer on our Golden Eagles! SMTTT!

Pretty spring flowers are peeking out this week from the wet ground, and budding on trees. Yesterday the temperature in Hattiesburg, Mississippi was a warm 79 degrees...today a brisk 35 degrees with a real feel of 23 degrees! That's the way it is in South Mississippi and we love it!

William H. Hardy founded Hattiesburg in 1882 and named it after his wife Hattie. Hattiesburg's nickname "The Hub City" sprang from its beginnings as a center of the lumber and railroad industries. It is also the center of a "Hub" of larger cities such as Jackson, MS, Mobile, AL, and New Orleans, LA. Not only is Hattiesburg my home, it is home to The University of Southern Mississippi, William Carey University, and Camp Shelby which is the largest National Guard training base east of the Mississippi River. I am proud to call Hattiesburg home!

Hattiesburg has been home to me for 20 years now. From the beginning I knew the Hub City was a special place to live. But I never could have imagined how strong the bond is that this community holds when tragedy strikes. In February of 2013, Hattiesburg was struck by a very violent F4 tornado. It was one of eight tornadoes that touched down in southern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama that day. The damage to homes was unexplainable and unimaginative. Miraculously, no one was killed by the tornado. This community came together in a way that touched my heart forever. Volunteer headquarters were set up immediately and an overwhelming number of citizens were showing up to ask how they could help.

In the hours after the tornado, crews of five to six people were going door to door to check on the well being of their neighbors. An influx of supplies, money and tarps were brought to our headquarters and distributed to those in need. We had over 1,000 volunteers over a period of 16 days with boots on the ground assisting in everything from tree removal, to caring for those that were displaced and homeless.

The outpouring of love and compassion this community showed is what makes Hattiesburg one of the most amazing places to call home.

The Oaks Historic District is one of the most treasured neighborhoods in Hattiesburg. It's architectural integrity serves as a tangible link to Hattiesburg's growth into the regional center of southeast Mississippi. The period of significance of The Oaks Historic District is 1900 through 1942.

Hattiesburg is commonly referred to as the "Hub City" due to its excellent location and convenience to neighboring cities.

For example you can end up on the sandy beaches of Gulfport, MS within an hour, enjoy the sparkling turquoise water of Destin, FL in just over three hours, and the Jazz city of New Orleans is a mere two hours away, just to name a few. While Hattiesburg continues to offer the highest in quality of living, those weekend getaways are all easily accessible from our great central location known as "the Hub City".
