Many people do not know of the many many historical landmarks in Mississippi. We have one right here in Byram! The Swinging Bridge was constructed in 1905 and was the crossing point over the Pearl River joining Hinds and Rankin counties. In 1979, it was placed on The National Register of Historic Places in Mississippi. The bridge was closed to automotive traffic in 1987 and only allowed pedestrian traffic. Then, for a time no traffic of any form was allowed because of safety. In 2013, the Historic Swinging Bridge was reopened to pedestrian traffic and restored to be used safely. Many people tell stories about crossing this swaying bridge and some even tell ghost stories and say it is haunted. Who knows?
